Capt. John W. Maddick was born at Hamilton, Ontario, on December 10, 1859. His first experience on the water was two months in the steamer Passport, sailing between Hamilton and Montreal in the year 1881. Then he sailed between Montreal and Duluth in 1882 on the steamer St. Magnus and for the subsequent three seasons he was in the E. M. Foster. the Butchers' Maid and the Butchers' Boy, all of Port Arthur, and trading for the most part on Lake Superior. In 1886 he was again on the steamer St. Magnus, in 1887 he went into the Lothair, on the run between Parry Sound and Buffalo, and in 1888 he was aboard the steamer Newburg, plying between Ogdensburg and Chicago. During the season of 1889 he had the position of first mate on the steamer Rupert, sailing out of Toronto, and the following season he shipped as chief mate in the steamer Lothair, running between Blind River and Cleveland. He became chief mate of the steamer St. Magnus in 1891, on the run between Kingston,Chicago and Port Arthur. Then in 1892 he became first mate of the steamer Macassa, and that post he retained until 1896, when he was chief mate on the Cleopatra. In 1897 he was appointed to command of the steamer Macassa, which position he still holds.
