Capt. James Dougherty

Capt. James Dougherty was born in Colborne on April 11, 1844, and got a Common School education in that village. He started sailing at the age of fifteen years, with Capt. Conacher on the schooner Marget. The next season he was in the schooner Advance, and for seven years in different vessels, including the schooners Richmond,Mary Grover and Caledonia. At the age of 22 years he was appointed captain of the schooner Advance, owned by J. B. Dewey & Co. This position he held for two years, and afterwards sailed for two years the schooner Alma, of Montreal, owned by the same company.

Afterwards, he sailed the schooners Two Brothers, of Montreal,Sybilla and Octavia, owned by the late Hon. Joseph Keefer, M.P.P. for East Northumberland.Capt. Dougherty then bought interests in the schooners Tranchmontagne,Eliza White,Paragon, and Fleet Wing. For the last ten years he has been engaged by the Rathbun Company of Deseronto and has been captain of the big steamer Reliance. He is still in their employ.

Captain Dougherty in 1866 married Miss Ellen Redfearn, a daughter of Captain Redfearn, who sailed the brig New York and other big vessels on the great lakes. They have three daughters, two of whom are married, one to Capt. Robert Snetsinger, of Lakeport Preserving Co., and another to Mr. F. O. McGlennan of Chase Bros., Colborne.Captain Dougherty has always been a staunch Liberal and is a high-standing member of the A. F. and A. M. and the A. C. U. W.
