The Globe, April 16, 1898
There is no more efficient pilot on the great lakes and river St. Lawrence than Capt. Webster Augustus. He holds a master's certificate for both steam and sail vessels, and for the past seven years he has piloted on those waters. He was born in Wellington, Ont., in the year 1843, and there he was educated, his progenitors being Quakers, or Friends. He has sailed in so many vessels that their enumeration would be tedious, and he has had his share of narrow escapes. He was on board the schooner Annie Maud when she sank in 1863, through collision with the brig Peerless, and in the year 1867 he had a remarkable escape from drowning when the schooner Royal Albert was cast away. Capt. Webster Augustus married Miss Eliza Eldred, of Rome, N.Y. in 1867. They have no children. Politically. Capt. Webster Augustus is a Liberal, but he seldom takes an active part in public affairs. It is said of him that he knows the channels through the St. Lawrence River rapids as thoroughly as if they were drained and laid bare in front of him.
