Vessels from 200 to 300 tons shall have chain plates ½ x 2 ¾ inches, 300 to 400 tons 5/8 x 3 inches, 400 to 500 tons 5/8 x 3 ½ inches, 500 to 700 tons 5/8 x 4 inches, and over 700 tons ¾ x 4 inches flat iron, well secured to the hull with backers at least eight inches long. The chain-plate bolts to be driven through frames and ceiling, and secured on the inside with keys or nots. If round iron is used, the size must be in proportion to the above table.
