Ocean-going Vessels

Although not true "canallers" mention must be made of the European-owned vessels using the canals in increasing numbers in the Great Lakes to Europe trade. These vessels conform to regular canaller dimensions but are faster and have a much lower block coefficient, about 0.73. They also have a more conventional general arrangement with machinery amidships. The cargo winches are arranged to suit the mooring requirements in the locks already described, and in addition the regular snubbing winch and compressor are fitted on the forecastle deck. Landing booms are not generally fitted.
