When the Seaway is opened to traffic in the Summer of 1959 the canaller will suddenly be operating in competition with much larger ships and in consequence the future of the canaller is at present in some doubt. As previously mentioned the canallers are divided into three main categories; bulk, package and special freighters. The effect of the Seaway will be quite different in the three types and some attempt is made in the following to analyze each case.
