Work on the construction of the new city-side dock for the Toronto paddle steamer TRILLIUM began on October 31st, when the tug G. W. ROGERS brought to the scene the Canadian Dredge and Dock DERRICK NO. 7 as well as other equipment. Shortly after she was christened on October 29th, the Upper Lakes Shipping stemwinder CANADIAN EXPLORER (the former NORTHERN VENTURE and CABOT) began to run her trials, and was expected to be in service several days later. Latest word indicates that the U.S. Steel steamers JOHN HULST and HORACE JOHNSON will be towed to Thunder Bay by the 7th of November. Western Metals Corp. also confirms that it has actually purchased B. F. AFFLECK, JOSHUA A. HATFIELD and AUGUST ZIESING as well, and that these three vessels will be towed around to Thunder Bay in May of 1984 for scrapping. The demolition of the old Maple Leaf Mills (Toronto Elevators) grain elevator complex on the Toronto waterfront was completed by Western Metals Corp. by mid-October. Needless to say, the western end of Toronto Harbour looks very bare with this landmark gone from the scene.
