Ever since Groupe Desgagnes Inc. purchased THOROLD (IV), (a) GOSFORTH (72), early in 1984, the ship has had more than her fair share of misfortune. She had a serious altercation with a Welland Canal fender cable in June, and later a crewman was killed during a canal passage. On January 5, 1985. THOROLD cleared Montreal bound for the Magdalen Islands to load salt, but that evening she suffered a loss of power. She was pushed downriver toward the Quebec Bridge, and the span was closed to traffic as a precaution in case THOROLD hit it. An icebreaker rescued the ship just in time, and she resumed her trip the following day. On January 14, bound back to Montreal with her salt cargo, she grounded on Red Islet, near the mouth of the Saguenay River, severely goring her hull and causing her bottom tanks and forward hold to become flooded. THOROLD was refloated, and on January 15 she was at Matane. On the same day, she left for Quebec City, escorted by the tug CAPT. IOANNIS S., and she subsequently went on the drydock at Lauzon for repairs.
