Two giant new bulk and container ships will be making their entry into the Seaway early in April. These ships are of 33,000 tons DWT and will make them the largest ships to enter the Seaway, either lake or ocean type. The FEDERAL SCHELDE and FEDERAL ST. LAURENT are owned by Federal Commerce & Navigation Co., Ltd., Montreal, but will be operated by their Belgian affiliate "Belcan". Their present schedule is for one to load 30,000 tons of steel at Newport, Wales and leave March 26th, which is considered to be the largest cargo of finished steel loaded aboard a single vessel. The second ship will load 20,500 tons of steel at Antwerp, March 25th, Both cargoes are destined for American buyers. We would suggest that all members keep a watch out for these ships as they pass through the Welland Canal as it would be interesting to see if any paint is removed from their hulls as they go through the locks. From my experience, the larger "salties" do a better job than the small ones, especially those of Greek or Panamanian registry. George T. Davie Co. Ltd., of Lauzon, Quebec, a shipbuilding and repair division of Canadian Vickers Ltd., Montreal, Quebec, has sold the assets of the former to Davie Shipbuilding Ltd., a Lauzon, Que. subsidiary of Canada Steamship Lines Ltd.
