We present below our annual list of Canadian Vessels,
with the names of Masters, Rig, Tonnnge, 0wners, When and Where Built, and
Value, as nearly as can be ascertained. Believing that it would be interesting
and useful to the commercial public, we have made every effort to make it as
accurate as possible, and have to thank many gentlemen interested in the Lake
Marine for their aid in its compilation and corrections. There is an urgent
necessity for the passage of a law conpelling the registration of vessels,
similar to that in force in England and the United States, the advantages of
which would be great in insurance operations, or in attaching or seizing any
vessels as at present, there is no knowing, except by hearsay, when a vessel was
built, who she belongs to, or indeed anything relating to her. A law compelling
such registration -- when the vessel is launched and also if she should be sold,
making it law to register the sale, would be a measure highly acceptable to
shippers and shipowners. The value of the vessel named in this list is, of
course, only an approximation, as it would be impossible to obtain it
accurately.
